If you’re considering applying for a Massachusetts License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification (FID) Card, now is the time to act.
The Basic Firearms Safety (BFS) Course, currently required to apply for an LTC or FID, is scheduled to undergo significant changes beginning April 2, 2026. These changes are expected to impact both the length and cost of the required training.
What We Know So Far
As of today:
-
The current Basic Firearms Safety Course remains valid and accepted for LTC and FID applications.
-
Effective April 2, 2026, the required training will transition to a much longer course, which will likely result in higher costs for applicants.
-
The new curriculum has not yet been released, and details remain limited.
-
It is currently unclear whether existing BFS instructors will remain certified under the new requirements.
Because of these unknowns, we strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about applying for an LTC or FID to complete their training and submit their application by the end of March 2026, while the current process is still in place.
Why Register Now?
-
✔ Shorter, established course format
-
✔ Lower cost compared to anticipated future requirements
-
✔ Clear, known application process
-
✔ Avoid uncertainty surrounding new training standards
Completing your Basic Firearms Safety Course now helps ensure a smoother, more predictable path through the licensing process.
