Without taking the proper precautions at home, you leave your family members at risk when you own a firearm. There are many best practices to ensure that your weapons do not end up in the wrong hands – Follow these tips as a responsible gun owner.
Lock it Up
Let’s start with the most obvious – keep your weapons securely locked up. If you have young children in the home, your best bet is probably to use a locking safe rather than just a cable lock. You don’t want to take any risk in your child getting a hold of your firearms. If you have young children, you should keep your weapons unloaded when they are not in use and be sure to store the ammo separately. Double check and triple check to ensure your guns are unloaded and stored properly in the home. This way it is near to impossible for something to go wrong.
Education is Key
Not only should you continuously educate yourself about firearms but be sure to inform your children and any others who are living in your home. It is okay for children to know about guns! It is not okay to neglect to teach them about gun safety, especially if you are a gun owner. Let them know that there are good guys with guns but also bad guys who use weapons improperly. Explain the Second Amendment and why it is important to our history and our rights.
