The National Rifle Association (NRA) originated in 1871 by Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate. According to Church, the primary goal of the association is to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis”.
Since then, the NRA has grown rapidly, offering youth programs which include shooting sports events and other affiliated programs like 4H, Boy Scouts, and more, as well as creating publications like the The American Rifleman, to keep NRA members in the loop about new firearms bills.
After repeated attacks to the Second Amendment Right, the association started up the Institute for Legislative Action (AKA NRA-ILA). The ILA’s main purpose focused around the need for political defense among responsible, lawful gun owners.
